Rabbit

Rabbit, rabbit.
My mom said this on the first day of the month when I was a kid. Her mom said it, too, but I couldn’t tell you how many generations the tradition goes back.
Lindsay thought I was having a stroke the first time she heard me say it. I couldn’t tell her where it came from or really what it even meant; just that if it’s the first thing you say on the first day of a new month, you’ll have a lucky month. I don’t have any hard data, but I’m prone to superstition, so I’m just going to assume the months when I did say rabbit, rabbit are better than the ones I didn’t.
There is a Wikipedia entry on this phenomenon, which suggests that the origins may go back as far as 13th-century England. But nobody really knows why rabbits. Maybe because rabbits are generally happy creatures that jump into the future? Who can say? You can take a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink.
Anyway. Rabbit, rabbit.
One Thing: Showering Babies
As you can probably tell, I’m wiped this week, but couldn’t let a week go by without saying thank you to everybody who came to our impromptu “baby shower” last weekend. We’re entering a stage of our lives when it’s rare to have so many important people in your life gathered at your home, and it’s impossible to spend as much time with everybody as you would like. It was a paradoxical day; special for the time spent with friends and family, painful because it’s simply never enough.
Potato Carrot Bighead doesn’t know how lucky he is, but maybe he will when he’s old enough to use that Black + Decker playstation. (Thanks, Jamie, Matt, Amelia, and Maggie!)
